Japan’s solar panel makers suffer as power plant demand fades
Japan trails much of the world as both a producer and a market for solar power technology, struggling to keep pace with the cheaper and plentiful competition overseas.

Proinso, Joules Power to bring live 28-MWp solar park in Bangladesh in July
British solar power firm Proinso said on Tuesday it has partnered with Bangladesh-based Joules Power Ltd on a 28-MWp solar project in the Asian country.

French utility Engie is looking to further expand in China's renewable energy sector, seeking to expand its footprint in the nation, said Isabelle Kocher, CEO of French energy company Engie Group.

Middle East Blazes a Trail With SolarThe Middle East has attracted more than its share of renewable energy projects in the past couple of years, with hundreds of megawatts of solar capacity added by countries across the region. If this wasn’t enough Saudi Arabia signed a memorandum of understanding with SoftBank Group Corp in March for a $200 billion solar power project in the kingdom that, if achieved on the planned timescales, would effectively dwarf all of the other solar projects previously undertaken in the region.

 Solar energy firm REC Group wears its award-winning “TwinPeak” solar modules like a badge of honour. Made in Singapore, these modules can harness more sunlight than the standard module by using half-cut polysilicon cells, for example.

Jakabaring solar power plant inaugurated to support Asian Games
South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin inaugurated a 2-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power plant at Jakabaring Sport City in the provincial capital of Palembang on Saturday as part of preparations for the 2018 Asian Games, which will take place from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2.

UAEU converts solar energy to electricity using innovative method
There are a number of ways to convert solar energy to useful electricity. One such way is by using the so-called Seebeck-Peltier effect, also known as the thermoelectric effect. That is the method used by Dr Thies Thiemann and one of his students at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), which allows to produce energy using minimal land.

MENA projects shortlisted for global future cities competition
A 10km2 satellite village, called “Smart Village Dubai”, which features a specially designed energy-generating greenhouse unit that generates crops. The idea, proposed by Ansar Azeez from Oman, aims to maximise the renewable energy capability in Dubai, whilst simultaneously stimulating agriculture.
